European stocks close higher with strong auto registration data and overall better trade sentiment buoying markets

European Markets

  • European stocks closed higher on the back of strong August auto registration data and better sentiment on international trade
  • The Euro Stoxx 600 closed up +0.33%, the FTSE 100 advanced +0.42%, the DAX rose +0.5%, and the CAC 40 finished up +0.56%
  • Investor sentiment for European stocks finished trading neutral with the advance/decline ratio for the Euro Stoxx 600 currently at 1.08x
  • Basic Resources (+3.13%), Chemicals (+1.69%), and Banks (+1.56%) stocks were the top performers in the Euro Stoxx 600 today
  • Utilities (-1.12%), Real Estate (-1.06%), and Food & Beverage (-0.71%) stocks were the worst performers in the Euro Stoxx 600 today
  • 61 stocks in the Euro Stoxx 600 hit 4-week highs while 63 stocks closed at 4-week lows

  • Danske’s (DANSKE DC) CEO stated today that a large part of the USD$234bn that flowed through its Estonian unit should be treated as suspicious.  His comments come in the wake of the bank’s report published today outlining the activity.  The CEO will step down.  Danske closed down 3.4% at 169 kronos.  Danske is rated ‘Top Short’ in our European Large-Cap Global Top Picks 
  • Ryanair’s (RYA ID) CEO made comments today ahead of its shareholders meeting tomorrow that were considerably humbler than he usually makes.  He stated “I am not longe in a position…to be haranguing others about the job they’re doing.   I need to improve my performance.”  Ryanair is rated ‘Top Short’ in our European Large-Cap Global Top Picks 
  • TomTom (TOM2 NA) shares fell again today on a downgrade from Degroof, the stock was cut to reduce from hold.  Renault choosing to partner with Google’s Android is a “game changer” according to the note.  Its price target was cut to 6 euros from 8.50.   Tomtom closed down 4.3% lower at 6.15 euros.  TomTom is rated ‘Attractive’ in our European SMID-Cap Global Top Picks
