  • The Euro Stoxx 600 closed up +0.2%, the FTSE 100 declined -0.19%, the DAX rose +0.75%, and the CAC 40 finished up +0.24%

  • Barclay’s (BARC LN) had its shares upgraded to buy from hold at Berenberg today and the shares closed 0.36% higher at 172.40 pence in the wake of the news.   Barclay’s sees performance in its investment banking unit coming better than the market expects and its 20% discount to European peers is “unwarranted”, according to the report.  Barclay’s is rated ‘Neutral’ in our United Kingdom All-Cap Global Top Picks
  • GlaxoSmithKline (GSK LN) received a favorable ruling is the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in a case in which consultants in China were trying to sue under US racketeering laws.  The court ruled that since the injuries alleged occurred outside the US GlaxoSmithKline cannot be sued in US court under these statutes.  GlaxoSmithKline closed 0.31% lower at 1532 pence despite the positive news.  GlaxoSmithKline is rated ‘Attractive’ in our United Kingdom All-Cap Global Top Picks
  • Royal Mail (RMG LN) slid 18% to close at 391.40 pence after cutting its operating profit expectation.  It now expects 500=550mn pounds compared with 694mn last year.  Royal Mail is seeing a decline in mail volumes and has been unable to deliver on its promised productivity gains which it said are “significantly below plan”.
