Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan taking profits from best level since 1991, Hang Seng at a 2 week low and mainland China markets closed this week

Japanese Market

  • The rally in Japanese stocks stalled after reaching the highest levels since 1991 during the first two trading days of the quarter 
  • Japan PMI for September came in at 50.2 vs. 51.5 in August, the worst reading in almost 2-years 
  • Japanese traders are beginning to worry that the US Government may begin to focus on US-Japan trade flows
  • The Nikkei 225 finished down 0.66% and the Topix closed down 1.17%
  • Investor sentiment for Japanese stocks finished negative with the advance/decline ratio for the Nikkei 225 closing at 0.21x

Chinese Market

  • The USMCA trade pact is seen as deterring any bilateral trade agreement between either Mexico or Canada with China -- a provision in the agreement forbids deals with non-market countries without notifying the other two members of the USMCA
  • The Hang Seng, if it continues at the current price level, will be on pace for its worst annual return since CY2011
  • The Hang Seng closed down 0.13%, Hang Seng China Enterprise advanced 0.29%, and the CSI 300 rose 1.04%
