Asian stocks closed higher as improved sentiment and better Chinese export data drew buyers to the market

Japanese Market

  • Japanese stocks rebounded overnight, but closed the week with the worst weekly drop since February 2018 
  • The Nikkei 225 finished up 0.46% and the Topix closed up 0.03%

Chinese Market

  • Asian stocks rebounded overnight, following the previous 2-day drop across stock markets in the region; however, Hong Kong stocks closed the week down for the third straight week as worries about US-China trade relations and decelerating global economic growth is dampening investor enthusiasm in the region 
  • The Hang Seng closed up 2.12%, Hang Seng China Enterprise advanced 2.05%, and the CSI 300 rose 1.49%
  • The US Treasury staff has advised Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin that China is not manipulating its currency 
  • The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the daily reference rate to 6.9501 -- the 9th straight session where the rate has been weakened and suggests the PBOC isn’t overly concerned with a depreciation in the Yuan 
  • The Wall Street Journal is reporting that US President Donald Trump plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina in November 
  • Investor sentiment for Hong Kong stocks finished positive with the advance/decline ratio for the Hang Seng closing at 2.57x
