Asian stocks lower, risk-off sentiment grows as trade concerns weigh

Japanese Market

  • Risk aversion returned to Japanese stocks as trade concerns sent shares lower in tandem with other Asian markets
  • The Nikkei 225 finished down 0.53% and the Topix closed down 0.53%
  • Softbank (9984 JP) said its telecom unit IPO is fully subscribed, it has sold all of the USD$23 billion of shares it intended to sell
  • The Topix has seen USD$256 billion in market cap erased in the last 3 trading sessions
  • Investor sentiment for Japanese stocks finished negative with the advance/decline ratio for the Nikkei 225 closing at 0.41x

Chinese Market

  • Chinese stocks, along with other Asian shares, dropped in overnight trading with the “risk-off” mood in global markets continuing for a third straight day with the arrest of the Huawei’s CFO spooking local traders
  • Canadian authorities announce they have arrested the CFO of the Chinese technology company Huawei, Meng Wazhou, and faces extradition to the United States for allegedly attempting to ignore the US-imposed trade embargo on Iran.  Traders worry this news could derail the momentum in negotiations between US and Chinese officials on the ongoing trade dispute between the two countries.  
  • The Hang Seng closed down 1.62%, Hang Seng China Enterprise declined 1.38%, and the CSI 300 retreated 0.48%
  • Moody’s reaffirms its “stable” outlook for Asian banks heading into CY2019, including Chinese mainland lenders, despite a weakening outlook for growth.  However, a sharp escalation in the trade dispute between the US and Chinese government could materially impact the credit worthiness of the banks.
  • Investor sentiment for Hong Kong stocks finished negative with the advance/decline ratio for the Hang Seng closing at 0.14x
