European Markets

  • European stocks are higher mid-session with news of trade progress between the US and China fueling risk-on
  • President Trump said “The US had made substantial progress in our trade talks with China” in a tweet late this weekend 
  • While Chinese officials echoed President Trump’s optimistic tone, China’s official Xinhua News Agency later published a commentary saying talk may face “new uncertainties” and that the challenges between the countries are “long-term, complicated and arduous” 
  • The Euro Stoxx 600 is currently up +0.27%, the FTSE 100 is higher by +0.22%, the DAX has advanced +0.45%, and the CAC 40 has risen +0.46%
  • UK PM Theresa May will update Parliament on Brexit progress this week
  • PM May has pushed back the deadline for a final vote on its deal to leave the EU to March 12th
  • Press reports are that the EU is considering a 21-month extension of Brexit negotiations, believing 3 months is not sufficient time
  • Investor sentiment for European stocks is positive with the advance/decline ratio for the Euro Stoxx 600 currently at 1.53x
