  • The next round of trade negotiations between the US and China resumes this week in Beijing, with both side sounding a positive tone
  • In a strange coincidence, 2 US Navy warships sailed through the Taiwan Straight to start the week;  according to Reuters the two destroyers were the William P. Lawrence and Stethem.
  • US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Trade Rep Robert Lighthizer and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He will all be participating in talks from the start

  • Both sides are anxious to conclude a deal; further talks will be help in Washington next week
  • Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said the enforcement mechanisms in the deal-a central US concern from the start- are "close to done" and simply need "some fine tuning"
  • He added "We hope within the next 2 rounds...to be at a point where we can reccomend to the President that we have a deal or reccomend that we do not"
  • President Trump recently stated he expects China's President Xi to come to the White House "soon", such is his confidence that a deal will be completed
  • The US has continued its pressure on China, most recently keeping it on its "priority watch list" of nations that do not adequately protect intellectual property rights
  • Chinese President Xi has been keen to show China is changing, his speech to 40 world leaders last week in Beijing detailed a host of changes China has undertaken to protect foreigner firms operating in China
