Asian Stocks While You Were Sleeping

Japanese Market Recap

  • Japanese equities closed higher with the Nikkei 225 +0.48%. Consumer staples (+2.82%) was a significant outperformer, followed by financials stocks (+0.48%). Materials (-0.11%) and consumer discretionary (-0.08%) were the only sectors in the red in the Nikkei 225
  • Market breadth in the Nikkei 225 was decidedly positive as 135 stocks advanced, compared to 85 declines
  • The Nikkei 225 traded 11.90% below its average 10-day volume
  • Japan’s CGPI growth for April came in at +2.0% on a y/y basis, which was in-line with expectations 

 

Chinese Market Recap

  • Chinese and Hong Kong stocks broadly advanced with the Hang Seng +1.35%, the CSI 300 +0.94%, and the Shanghai Composite +0.34%. All sectors in the Hang Seng were positive. Real estate (+1.98%) and financials (+1.59%) were the best performing sectors in the Hang Seng, with utilities (+0.04%) and consumer discretionary (+0.51%) being the largest laggards
  • Market breadth in the Hang Seng was overwhelmingly positive with 45 out of 50 stocks advancing in today’s session
  • Volume in the Hang Seng was 10.38% higher than its 10-day average 
  • According to a Reuters report, the PBOC has increased liquidity by $24.63 billion through its 1-year medium-term lending facility (MLF), while leaving 1-year interest rates unchanged at 3.3% 
  • Data from the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) showed that Chinese commercial banks produced a combined net profit of $82.2 billion in 1Q2018 
  • The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) released data which indicated that new auto sales in China for April grew by 11.5% y/y. Increased demand for SUVs and commercial vehicles drove the growth in sales
  • Reuters reported that Chinese insurance companies are funneling capital through shadow lenders to real estate and infrastructure development firms, seeking to earn higher returns

Indian Market Recap

  • Indian equities were mixed with the Sensex +0.11% while the Nifty 50 was unchanged. Materials (+0.70%), consumer staples (+0.41%), and financials (+0.35%) were the biggest outperforming sectors in the Sensex, with consumer discretionary (-0.86%), industrials (-0.45%0, and energy (-0.26%) being the worst performers
  • Market breadth in the Sensex was relatively neutral with 16 stocks having advanced, while 14 stocks declined
  • The volume traded across India (India Composite) was 6.98% below its average 10-day level
  • Indian retail inflation in April rose 4.58% on a y/y basis, which is above the Reserve Bank of India’s target of a 4% increase. This marked the 6th consecutive month in which inflation what higher than the RBI’s goal

General Asian Recap

  • North Korea’s foreign ministry announced that it will demolish its northern nuclear test site in a public ceremony. Journalists from various countries including South Korea, China, Russia, the United States and Britain will be invited to the ceremony. US Secretary Mike Pompeo remarked that the US would lift sanctions on North Korea if the country’s nuclear program was fully dismantled

  • The HKD$ is unchanged in relation to the USD$
  • CNY¥ is depreciating 0.06% against the USD$
  • The JPY¥ is 0.11% weaker compared to the USD$

Highlights from Asian Bond Market

  • Indonesian 10-year bond is rallying, with yields falling nearly 0.05%
  • India’s 10-year bonds have retreated as yields have climbed by 9 bps
