China published a white paper on Sunday in which it put the blame for the present trade tensions square on the shoulders of the US

Some highlights from what China wrote:

  • China wrote that the US is using “beggar-thy-neighbor-unilateralism” in its trade dealings with China
  • China stated that President Trump and President Xi made an agreement on March 10 and when Trump hiked tariffs “the acts contradicted the agreement reached by the 2 presidents to ease friction through consultation
  • Not surprisingly, China said it was the US that backtracked on previous negotiations, adding, “the US government accusation of Chinese backtracking is totally groundless
  • China said after multiple rounds of high level talks, most issues had been agree upon but “the more the US government is offered, the more it wants….it persisted with exorbitant demands…and insisted on including mandatory requirements concerning China’s sovereign affairs..” which China won’t accept

  • One side should not cross the other’s ‘red lines.’  China will not give ground on issues of principal.”
  • China insists it has made extensive progress on US demands and complains that the US is “turning a blind eye to China’s unremitting efforts and remarkable progress in protecting intellectual property and improving the business environment for foreign investors.
  • Publication of the white paper was generally seen as a signal China is willing to talk, though few believe the will make the first move
  • The US has additional tariffs ready to place on Chinese imports if trade progress is not made
