Asian and Australian Stocks While You Were Sleeping

General Asia

  • Indonesia’s central bank increased interest rates for the first time since 2014. Rates on the Bank of Indonesia’s benchmark 7 Days Reverse Repo were raised by 25 basis points to 4.50%
  • Malaysia’s 1Q2018 GDP growth was reported at 5.4% y/y, below expectations of a 5.6% y/y increase. The 5.4% GDP growth in the first quarter marked the second consecutive quarter of GDP growth declines (+5.9% in 4Q2017 and +6.2% in 3Q2018)

Japanese Markets

  • Japanese equities finished higher today with the Nikkei 225 +0.53%
  • Healthcare (+1.22%) and materials (+0.88%) were the best performing sectors in the Nikkei 225
  • Telecommunications stocks (-0.13%) were the only stocks in the red in the Nikkei 225
  • Market breadth in the Nikkei 225 is notably positive with 150 stocks advancing, compared to 61 declines
  • Volume in the Nikkei 225 was 3.31% below its 10-day average
  • The JPY¥ has depreciated by 28 basis points against the USD$
  • Japan’s core machinery orders for March fell 3.9% on a m/m basis, higher than expectations of a 3.0% decrease
  • According to a Reuters report, Japan is considering the imposition of $409 million worth of tariffs on the US in retaliation for not receiving exemption from US imposed steel and aluminum tariffs

Chinese Markets

  • Chinese and Hong Kong Markets closed broadly lower with the Hang Seng -0.54%, the CSI 300 -0.74%, and the Shanghai Composite -0.48%
  • Information technology (+2.94%) and consumer discretionary (+0.16%) were the only sectors in the Hang to finish in positive territory
  • Financials (-1.26%) and real estate (-1.00%) were the largest laggards in the Hang Seng
  • Market breadth in the Hang Seng was overwhelmingly negative with 40 out of 50 stocks declining
  • Volume in the Hang Seng was slightly softer than average (5.00% below its 10-day average)
  • HKD$ is unchanged compared to the USD$
  • CNY¥ has appreciated by 7 basis points against the USD$
  • According to a report by the Nikkei Asian Review, China is considering increasing imports of agricultural and LNG imports from the US in exchange for lighter restrictions against Chinese telecom marker ZTE Group

Indian Markets

  • Indian equities declined across the board with the Sensex -0.67% and the Nifty 50 -0.54%
  • Consumer discretionary stocks (+0.11%) were the only stocks in the Sensex to close in the black
  • Consumer staples (-2.41%) and materials (-1.38%) were the worst performing sectors in the Sensex
  • Market breadth in the Sensex was notably negative with only 9 stocks in the index advancing (31 declines)
  • Volume in India was 45.43% above its 10-day average
  • INR ? has gained 0.14% in relation to the USD$

Australian Markets

  • Australian equites retreated with the ASX 200 -0.21%
  • Industrial (-1.24%) and health care stocks (-1.15%) provided the worst returns in the ASX 200 today
  • Market breadth in the ASX 200 was decidedly negative with 86 stocks advancing, while 100 stocks declined
  • Materials (+0.85%) and energy stocks (+0.44%) were the biggest outperformers in the ASX 200
  • The ASX 200 traded at 93.21% of its average 10-day volume
  • The AUD$ is unchanged against the USD$
  • Australia’s unemployment for April was reported at 5.6%, which was above the consensus of a 5.5% rate. Australian employment number, however, rose by 22,000 m/m in April, higher than expectations of a 20,000 m/m increase
