  • Envestnet, Inc. (ENV) and its subsidiaries engage in the development of intelligent and interactive systems for clients in the wealth management and financial wellness across the globe.
    • Envestnet is the top Russell 2000 stock trending by overall positive sentiment over the last month, which can be attributed to its scores in Event Sentiment and Story Sentiment, both of which are the best among index constituents.

  • Barnes & Noble, Inc. (BKS) is the popular bookseller in the United States that operates through its Barnes & Noble Retail and NOOK business segments.
    • Barnes & Noble actually ties Envestnet in terms of overall 1-month sentiment. The underlying sentiment metrics for Barnes & Noble, however, are much different than those of Evestnet. Unlike Evestnet, which maintains top scores in two sentiment sub-categories, Barnes & Noble maintains top 10 sentiment scores in all 4 sentiment sub-categories (Event Sentiment, Story Sentiment, Article Count, and Entity Sentiment) among index constituents.

  • Arlington Asset Investment Corp. (AI) is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that invests primarily in mortgage-backed and other related assets.
    • Arlington Asset Investment Corp. is the third most positively trending Russell 2000 stock trending by positive sentiment over the last month, however, the gap between Arlington Asset Investment and Barnes & Noble/Envestnet is significant. Although Arlington Asset Investment maintains number 4 and number 6 rankings in Entity Sentiment and Article Count, the company’s Event Sentiment and Story Sentiment scores do not even crack the top 20 among index constituents.

  • Groupon, Inc. (GRPN) is the operator of local commerce marketplaces aimed at connecting merchants to consumers through offerings goods, products, and services at a discount.
    • Groupon actually maintains scores in Event Sentiment, Story Sentiment, and Article Count that rank in the top 10 of Russell 2000 index constituents. However, Groupon’s relatively poor Entity Sentiment score that ranks 53rd drags the company’s overall sentiment score lower.

  • Stifel Financial Corp. (SF) operates as a financial services and bank holding company, providing clients with retail and institutional wealth management, investment banking, and other related services.
    • Stifel Financial Corp. maintains fairly strong sentiment across all sentiment sub-categories. As the only “Top Buy” Russell 2000 stock trending by positive sentiment highlighted above, Stifel Financial is our highest conviction long idea in this post.

  • Fossil Group, Inc. (FOSL) designs, develops, and distributes consumer fashion accessories such as watches, handbags, sunglasses, and more to clients across the globe.
    • Interestingly enough, Fossil Group’s Event Sentiment, Story Sentiment, and Article Count scores all rank in the top 5 among Russell 2000 Index constituents. Fossil Group’s overall sentiment is hindered by its Entity Sentiment score that ranks as 120th among Russell 2000 stocks, suggesting negative sentiment surrounding the Fossil Group company despite positive sentiment surrounding recent events and news stories. Additionally, Fossil Group is a “Top Short” stock that we actuall highlighted as a “Top Short stock research report today, seen here. Could be a really interesting opportunity for a contrarian short play on Fossil Group while many are positive on the stock.
