Asian and Australian Stocks While You Were Sleeping

Japanese Markets

  • Japanese equities finished lower with the Nikkei 225 -0.18%
  • Consumer staples (-1.47%), healthcare (-0.57%), and financials (-0.50%) were the biggest underperforming sectors in the Nikkei 225
  • Telecommunications services (+0.40%), materials (+0.27%), and industrials (+0.17%) stocks were the best performers in the Nikkei 225
  • Market breadth in the Nikkei 225 was negative today with 88 stocks advancing, compared to 124 declines
  • Trading volume in the Nikkei 225 was 21.04% below the average 10-day levels
  • Japan’s Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy forecasts Japan’s annual spending on social services, such as welfare and nursing aide, to increase by 60% (to $1.7 trillion) by FY2040. The total spending on social initiative in 2040 would represent nearly one-quarter of Japan’s GDP in FY2040

Chinese Markets

  • Chinese equities were mixed with the CSI 300 -0.38%, while the Shanghai Composite rose 0.02%. Hong Kong markets were closed today for the celebration of Buddha's birthday
  • Market breadth in the Shanghai Composite was decidedly positive with 709 stocks advancing, compared to only 576 stocks in the red
  • Volume in the Shanghai Stock Exchange was modestly above its 10-day average (+0.28% of 10-day levels)
  • The Chinese Ministry of Finance released a statement, declaring that China’s import duty on passenger vehicles will be reduced to 15%, down from 25% prior. The tariff change will go into effect on July 1st

Indian Markets

  • Indian equities advanced across the board with the Sensex +0.10%, and the Nifty 50 +0.19%
  • Consumer staples (-1.28%) and materials (-0.66%) stocks were the worst performers in the Sensex
  • Consumer discretionary (+1.72%) and uncurtails sectors (+0.28%) were the biggest outperformers in the Sensex
  • Market breadth in the Sensex was relatively neutral with 17 out of 31 stocks finishing higher
  • Volume across Indian markets was relatively in-line with the average for the region (0.21% below 10-day average trading levels)

Australian Markets

  • Australian market closed lower today with the ASX 200 -0.70%
  • Market breath in the ASX 200 was notably negative as only 41 out of 200 stocks finished in the black
  • The ASX 200 traded at 92.89% of its average 10-day volume
  • Telecommunications services (-1.98%), healthcare, and consumer staples (-0.85%) were the largest laggards in the ASX 200
  • Real estate (+0.14%) was the only sector in positive territory in the ASX 200
  • The RBC’s proposed tax cuts are in jeopardy after it was reported that Senator Pauline Hanson withdrew her party’s backing of the bill, likely leaving the bill without enough support to get past the Upper House

  • The USD$ is weaker against most Asian currencies
  • INR? is 0.11% stronger compared to the USD$
  • CNY¥ has appreciated by 0.25% relative to the USD$

Highlights from the Asian/Australian Bond Market

  • Australian 10-year bonds are higher today, with yields on the Aussie 10-year declining by more than 2 basis points
  • Yields on the Philippines 10-year treasury have risen by nearly 12 basis points
