Asian and Australian Stocks While You Were Sleeping

Japanese Markets

  • Japanese stocks finished lower today with the Nikkei 225 -1.12%
  • Telecommunications (-1.80%), materials (-1.59%), and consumer discretionary stocks (-1.50%) were the biggest underperformers in the Nikkei 225
  • Healthcare (+0.09%) was the only sector in the Nikkei 225 in positive territory
  • Market breadth in the Nikkei 225 was notably negative with 182 stocks declining, compared to only 32 advances
  • Volume in the Nikkei 225 was at 118.27% compared to its 10-day average

Chinese Markets

  • Chinese and Hong Kong stocks end trading mixed with the Hang Seng +0.31%, while the CSI 300 and the Shanghai Composite declined by 0.71% and 0.45%, respectively
  • All sectors in the Hang Seng were positive, except for telecommunications services (-0.26%)
  • Energy (+1.18%) and industrials (+0.82%) were the best performing stocks in the Hang Seng
  • Market breadth in the Hang Seng was decidedly positive as 37 of 50 stocks finished in the black
  • The Hang Sang’s volume was 4.23% below its 10-day average
  • According to a Reuters report, China’s Commerce Ministry spokesman Gao Feng remarked that China has not given a pledge to cut the US’ trade deficit by a certain figure. This is in contrast to earlier reports that China was willing to cut the US-China trade deficit by $200 billion
  • Sino-American tensions continue to escalate after the US rescinded an invitation to China to participate in a military exercise. China’s increased militarization of islands in the South China Sea has been cited by the Wall Street Journal as the cause for this development

Indian Markets

  • Indian stocks broadly advanced with the Sensex +0.93% and the Nifty 50 +0.80%
  • Consumer discretionary (-1.43%) and energy (-0.29%) stocks were the largest laggards in the Sensex
  • Financials (+1.32%) and materials (+1.31%) sectors were the best performers in the Sensex
  • Market breadth in the Sensex was positive with 22 stocks advancing, while only 9 stocks declined
  • Volume across Indian markets was 17.82% below its 10-day average

Australian Markets 

  • Australian stocks posted moderate gains with the ASX +0.08%
  • Consumer discretionary (+1.44%), real estate (+1.23%) and consumer staples stocks (+1.12%) were the biggest outperformers in the ASX 200
  • Energy (-0.55%), financials (-0.44%), and materials (-0.38%) provided the worst returns in the ASX 200
  • Market breadth in the ASX 200 was negative with only 78 out of 200 stocks gaining on the day
  • Volume in the ASX 200 was relatively in-line with its usual levels (-1.92% below 10-day average)

Highlights from Asian/Australian Bond Markets

  • Hong Kong Treasuries are rallying, with yields on the Hong Kong 10-year down 6.3 basis points to 2.15%
  • Yields on Australia’s 10-year bond are 3.4 basis points lower
  • Treasuries in the Philippines are higher today, with yields on the Philippines 10-year down 4.5 basis points
