Asian and Australian Stocks While You Were Sleeping

Asian  Markets

  • Negative investor sentiment across Asia/Australia was driven by President Trump’s cancellation of the US-North Korea summit, though news that North Korea was willing to continue negotiations buoyed investor outlook

Japanese Markets

  • Japanese stocks finished modestly higher with Nikkei 225 +0.06%
  • Telecommunications (-1.27%), financials (-0.21%), and industrials (-0.19%) were the only Nikkei 225 sectors in the red
  • Consumer staples (+0.82%) and materials stocks (+0.60%) were the best performers in the Nikkei 225
  • Market breadth in the Nikkei 225 was negative with 86 stocks advancing, compared to 130 declines
  • Volume in the Nikkei 225 was at 95.68% in relation to its 10-day average

Chinese Markets

  • Chinese and Hong Kong stocks declined across the board with the Hang Seng -0.56%, the CSI 300 -0.28%, and the Shanghai Composite -0.42%
  • The energy sector (-4.39%) was the most significant laggard in the Hang Seng, followed by consumer discretionary (-1.00%) and telecommunications services (-0.75%).
  • Only industrials (+0.19%) and utilities stocks (+0.28%) finished in positive territory in the Hang Seng today
  • Market breadth in the Hang Sang was decidedly negative with only 18 out of 50 stocks in the black
  • Volume in the Hang Seng was 0.41% higher compared to its 10-day average
  • According to a Reuters report, debt growth at Chinese companies has slowed to its lowest rate in 13 years. Aggregate corporate debt grew by 3.0% Y/Y in 1Q2018 to $2.1 trillion
  • A Bloomberg report stated that China is considering a tariff reduction on consumer goods such as food, medicine, health products, and cosmetics, which would go into effect July 1st

Indian Markets

  • Indian stocks advanced with the Sensex +0.76% and the Nifty 50 +0.87%
  • Consumer discretionary (+1.66%), materials (+1.49%), and energy stocks (+1.10%) were the biggest outperforming stocks in the Sensex
  • Consumer staples (-0.93%) was the only negative sector
  • Market breadth in the Sensex was notably positive with 24 stocks finishing higher, while only 7 stocks closed lower
  • Volume in Indian markets was 12.47% lower than its 10-day average

Australian Markets

  • Australian stocks closed slightly lower with the ASX 200 -0.07%
  • Energy (-1.27%), materials (-1.14%), and real estate stocks (-0.45%) provided the worst returns in the ASX 200 today
  • Telecommunications (+2.73%), consumer discretionary (+1.44%), and consumer staples (+0.94%) were the biggest relative outperformers in the ASX 200
  • Market breadth in the ASX 200 was relatively neutral with 94 of 200 stocks advancing
  • Volume across Australian markets was moderately below usual levels (2.34% below 10-day average)
