Asian & Australian Markets
- Sentiment in Asia was moderately positive, with focus shifting from last week’s G-7 meeting to the upcoming US-North Korea summit. Economic data out of China was mixed, while economic results out of Japan were stronger than expected
Japanese Stock Market
- Japanese stocks finished higher today with the Nikkei 225 advancing 0.48%
- Consumer staples (+1.16%), consumer discretionary (+1.16%), and telecommunications stocks (+0.99%) were the biggest outperformers in the Nikkei 225
- Materials (-0.84%) and information technology stocks (-0.27%) were the worst performers
- Market breadth for the Nikkei 255 was positive with 126 stocks advancing, compared to 90 declines
- Volume in the Nikkei 225 was 28.71% below its 10-day average
- Japan’s May M2 money supply grew 3.2% Y/Y, slightly below projections (+3.35%Y/Y forecasted)
- Japanese core machinery orders in April increased 10.1% m/m, significantly higher than the consensus (+2.4% m/m growth forecasted)
Chinese Stock Market
- Hang Seng stocks were mixed with the Hang Seng up 0.34%, the CSI 300 edging 0.01% higher, while the Shanghai Composite declined 0.47%
- Consumer staples (-1.15%), utilities (-0.18%), and telecommunications stocks (-0.12%) were the largest decliners in the Hang Seng
- Consumer discretionary (+2.08%), information technology (+0.92%), and energy (+0.55%) were the best performers
- Market breadth for the Hang Seng was notably positive with 32 out of 50 stocks finishing higher
- Volume in the Hang Seng was significantly lower than usual (38.18% below 10-day average levels)
- China’s CPI growth in May was in-line with expectations (+1.8%Y/Y vs +1.8%Y/Y projected). Chinese PPI increased more in May than was forecasted (+4.1% Y/Y vs +3.9% Y/Y anticipated)
Indian Stock Market
- Indian stocks advanced across the board with the Nifty 50 rising 0.18%, and the Sensex climbing 0.11%
- Telecommunications services (+2.98%), healthcare (+1.28%), and consumer staples stocks (+0.46%) were the biggest gainers
- Materials (-0.69%), utilities (-0.42%), and energy stocks (-0.23%) declined the most
- Market breadth for the Sensex was positive with 18 stocks advancing, compared to 13 declines
- Volume across Indian markets was 20.60% below 10-day average levels
Australian Stock Market
- Aussie stocks closed trading lower, with the ASX 200 down 0.20%
- Industrials (-0.99%), telecommunications services (-0.48%), and real estate stocks (-0.44%) were the largest laggards in the ASX 200
- Consumer discretionary (+0.44%), energy (+0.26%), and consumer staples (+0.25%) were the only positive sectors in the ASX 200
- Market breadth for the ASX 200 was decidedly negative with only 70 out of 200 stocks finishing higher
- Volume across Australian markets was 25.14% above its 10-day average
