European Stocks at Midday

European Markets

  • European equities are struggling to find direction today following the US-North Korea summit that seemed to have a positive outcome but provided few material strategic details. Focus has now shifted to the ECB June meeting on Thursday, during which potential rate hikes and a wind down of the ECB’s QE program will be discussed. UK unemployment data for April matched expectations. Italian treasuries continue to advance, while German treasuries show continued weakness
  • European stocks are mixed with the Euro Stoxx 600 up 0.07% and the DAX 0.06% higher, while the CAC40 has declined 0.19%, and the FTSE 100 is down 0.24%
  • Utilities (+0.55%), industrials (+0.20%), and information technology stocks (+0.15%) are the best performers in the Euro Stoxx 600
  • Energy (-0.50%), materials (-0.42%), and real estate stocks (-0.39%) are the most significant decliners
  • Market breadth for the Euro Stoxx 600 is moderately positive with 302 stocks advancing compared to 273 declines
  • Volume across European markets was 11.89% below its 10-day average
  • According to a Reuters report, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) expects the German economy to grow 2.1% over the remainder of CY2018 and through CY2019. The OECD projects German exports to increase by 4.5% over CY2018 and CY2019, despite the negative effect of US imposed tariffs
  • UK ILO unemployment for April came in at 4.2%, which was in-line with the consensus

Highlights from the European Bond Market

  • Italian treasuries continue to build on yesterday’s rally, with yields on Italy’s 10-year bond down 3.6 basis points to 2.785%
  • German Bunds are lower again today as the yield on the German 10-year is up 2.0 basis points to 0.509%
  • Yields on the Greek 10-year bond have fallen 4.4 basis points to 4.395%
  • UK sovereign treasuries are declining today, with the yield on the UK 10-year bond up 1.7 basis points to 1.418%
