US stocks are in the red as growing concerns about an escalating Sino-American trade war have driven today’s negative sentiment, with the S&P 500 -0.63%, the Dow Jones Industrial -1.21%, the Nasdaq Composite -0.83%, and the Russell 2000 -0.59%. Materials (-2.19%), industrials (-1.96%), and information technology stocks (-1.22%) are the biggest underperformers in the S&P 500 today, while telecommunications services (+1.58%), utilities (+0.51%), and consumer staples stocks (+0.44%) were the most significant outperformers. The VIX is up 146 basis points to 13.77. The yield on the US 10-year is down 3.5 basis points to 2.882%. The most actively trade options in the US markets today are GE July 20 ATM Puts, VIX August 22 OTM Calls, VIX July 20 OTM Calls, and EEM July 20 ATM Puts. The UDS$ index is positive today, as strength in the JPY¥ is being outweighed by weakness in the CNY¥, the EUR€, and the GBP£.

How Did European Stocks Close?

European stocks finished lower across the board, as rising global trade tensions roiled markets in the region, with the Euro Stoxx 600 -0.70%, the FTSE 100 -0.36%, the DAX -1.22%, and the CAC 40 -1.10%. Periphery markets were lower as well with Spain’s IBEX -0.14%, Italy’s FTSE MIB -0.07%, Portugal’s PSI 20 -0.45%, and Greece’s ASE -0.62%. Yield on the UK 10-year fell 4.0 basis points to 1.279%, while the yield on the German Bund sank 2.6 basis points to 0.368%.
