European Markets

  • Sentiment across European equity market was mostly negative, as mixed corporate earnings results in the regions clouded FY2018 outlook. Economic data out of the UK and Switzerland was softer than expected. European currencies are notably weaker against the USD$
  • European stocks are mostly lower with the Euro Stoxx 600 -0.09%, the CAC 40 -0.46%, the DAX -0.41%, while the FTSE 100 is +0.16%
  • Consumer staples (+0.81%), energy (+0.20%), and financials stocks (+0.01%) are the only stocks in the Euro Stoxx 600 in positive territory
  • Materials (-1.13%), real estate (-0.78%), and utilities stocks (-0.70%) are the largest laggards
  • Market breadth for the Euro Stoxx 600 is decidedly negative with only 194 out of 600 stocks advancing
  • Volume across European equity markets is 56.64% above its 10-day moving average
  • UK June retail sales grew +2.9%Y/Y, which was firmly below projections for a 3.7% Y/Y growth in retail sales
  • Ireland’s GDP growth in 1Q2018 was nearly 2-fold higher than estimated (+9.1% Y/Y vs +4.8% Y/Y consensus)
  • Switzerland’s trade surplus in June came in lower than anticipated (CHF2.59 billion vs CHF 3.2 billion estimated)
  • The EU is preparing a list of new tariffs to be imposed against the US, in the event that a European trade delegation is unable to dissuade President Trump from raising tariffs on European auto imports, in a meeting between the two parties next week. The list of items potentially facing increased levies include coal, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals

  • Italian sovereign treasuries are higher, with the yield on Italy’s 10-year down 2.8 basis points to 2.471%
  • UK treasuries are rallying today, with the yield on the UK 10-year down 1.9 basis points to 1.205%

  • The German Bund is unchanged today, with the yield on the German 10-year at 0.338%
