US Stocks

  • Investors will closely be watching the January Payrolls data which is set to be released at 8:30 AM.  Market expectations are for a +165k change in nonfarm payrolls in January 2019 vs +312k in December 2018  
  • US index futures are trading in a tight range, little changed, ahead of the January 2019 payrolls data with front-month Dow Jones minis +0.03%, S&P 500 minis –0.13%, and Nasdaq 100 minis –0.51% 
  • A disappointing earnings outlook from Amazon (AMZN) is weighing on US tech stocks, fueling a divergence in performance between tech and the rest of the US stock market this morning
  • After yesterday’s rally, the 7.9% advance in the S&P 500 for January 2019 is its best return for the 1st month of a year in 30 years 
  • US Biotech stocks experienced a record start to 2019 after dropping sharply in December 2018 though, in order for the current rally to continue, we may need to see some positive study results or M&A announcements
  • The VIX is little changed this morning and is currently at 16.59 after closing at 16.57 yesterday

  • Amazon (AMZN) reported fourth quarter 2018 EPS of USD$6.04, above consensus of USD$5.55.  Amazon fourth quarter revenue came at USD$72.4 billion, beating consensus of USD$71.9 billion.  This is Amazon's third record earnings report in a row.  Amazon gave guidance for first quarter 2019 net sales of USD$56-60 billion, below consensus that is presently USD$60.9 billion.  Amazon is rated “Neutral” in our US Large-Cap Global Top Stock Ideas and “Top Buy” in our US Consumer Discretionary Global Top Stock Ideas.
  • Chevron Corp. (CVX) posted earnings for CY4Q2019 that beat analysts’ consensus.   • Electrolux (OM:ELUX B) announced a comprehensive overhaul of its production of appliances in America.  Electrolux also announced it will spin off a division that makes professional appliances.  Electrolux will close a plant in Memphis and move other production to Chile.  Electrolux reported results above consensus.  Electrolux is rated “Neutral” in our European Large-Cap Global Top Stock Ideas.
  • Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM) reported financials for CY4Q2018 that crushed analyst estimates. Exxon generated an EPS of USD$1.41 in CY4Q2018, largely surpassing consensus of USD$1.08 and beating the highest analyst estimates that ranged between USD$0.89 and USD$1.26.  Exxon also announced that it repurchased USD$425mm of common stock in CY2018.   • Facebook (FB) is facing seven different data privacy investigations by Irish and EU authorities in the wake of new privacy rules.  Irish authorities said the investigations “are centered on the activities of very big internet companies and their users”. Cryptos

  • Cryptocurrencies are edging slightly higher this morning with the price of Bitcoin (BTC) up 0.75% in the last 24 hours to USD$3,484.97. All of the top ten largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, with the exception of Tether (USDT), are in the green this morning. Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Litecoin (LTC) are leading the gains among top ten cryptocurrencies, up 2.15% and 2.28% in the last 24 hours to USD$117.67 and USD$32.29, respectively. Binance Coin (BNB) currently leads all major coins in gains, surging 8.30% in the last 24 hours to USD$6.62.  
  • The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) has officially resubmitted its joint application with VanEck and SolidX to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded fund (ETF). CBOE initially withdrew its application for a BTC ETF after talks reportedly stalled due to the government shutdown. The SEC will have 240 days to decide whether to approve or reject the BTC ETF application once the application is published to the Federal Register, which has yet to happen.  
  • A Bloomberg article Friday morning highlights that investors who hold proof-of-stake (PoS) tokens could stake their tokens in order to survive the extended cryptocurrency bear market. As per the Bloomberg article, users who stake their tokens, which is essentially depositing tokens as collateral for a chance to be chosen to add the next block to the network’s chain, can receive yields from 5% to as high as 150%, depending on stake size. Bloomberg quotes Multicoin Capital Management partner Kyle Samani, who discussed, “Regardless of market conditions, staking provides returns denominated in the asset being staked. If you’re going to be long, you might as well stake.” 
  • The Food and Drug Administration of the Chinese Chongqing Yuzhong District is planning to leverage blockchain technology in its operational processes, according to news outlet The People’s Daily. Specifically, the Chinese district agency will implement blockchain technology to increase food supervision, drug quality assurance, and better track general product life cycles. The blockchain technology that will be used was developed by Chinese blockchain technology firm PrimeNumber Chain Technology Chengdu Co., Ltd.
