European Stocks

  • European stocks are declining with little conviction following weak German factory orders and mixed earnings reports
  • The Euro Stoxx 600 is currently up +0.12%, the FTSE 100 is higher by +0.03%, the DAX has fallen -0.48%, and the CAC 40 is lower by -0.22%
  • Germany factory orders dropped 1.6% M/M in December, the sharpest drop in 6 months.  Market forecasts were for a +0.3% increase.  The decline in factory orders, coupled with other soft economic data points, suggests the Germany economy, the largest in Europe, is experiencing a deceleration in economic growth.
  • For the V-shaped rally in European stocks to continue, we will need to see a greater number of better-than-expected 4Q earnings results.  Currently, the forward 12-month P/E stands at fair value for aggregate European stocks but we will need to see continued positive reports from European corporates to maintain the current valuation levels.
  • Investor sentiment for European stocks is positive with the advance/decline ratio for the Euro Stoxx 600 currently at 1.21x
  • Oil & Gas (+0.18%), Telecommunications (-0.14%), and Basic Resources (+0.52%) stocks are the top performers in the Euro Stoxx 600 today

Stellar (XLM) is leading the declines among major cryptocurrencies, down 5.05% in the last 24 hours to USD$0.074710.  Binance Coin (BNB) continues to be the crypto market’s stalwart coin, soaring 10.62% in the last 24 hours to USD$7.89.
  • A new report published by Canadian wealth management company Canaccord highlights that Bitcoin (BTC) mining is becoming increasingly more decentralized. The report analyzes BTC’s hash rate over the last 5 years and concludes that it has steadily become more widely dispersed over that period. A more competitive and distributed mining community, in turn, results in BTC being less vulnerable to network attacks.
  • The United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) published a report indicating that over 197mm pounds (USD$255mm) were lost in cryptocurrency-related scams in 2018. The report details that victims lost an average of 29,000 pounds (USD$37,000) from crypto-related scams in 2018. The FCA is also warning citizens to be wary of scams related to investments during the current quarter because it is considered peak investment season just before the tax year’s end.
  • Gerald Cotton, the recently deceased CEO of major Canadian cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX, filed his will just 12 days before his death, according to a Bloomberg report. In his will filed on November 27, 2018, Cotton designates wife Jennifer Robertson as the only beneficiary and executor of his estate. Cotton reportedly died due to complications with Crohn’s disease. Currently, more than 100,000 QuadrigaCX users are unable to access funds worth CAD$250mm (USD$190mm) in cryptocurrencies and fiat currencies due to Cotton’s death.
