  • US stocks index futures are hovering near pre-market lows following EU and Bank of England corporate profit warnings with front-month Dow Jones minis –0.60%, S&P 500 minis –0.61% and Nasdaq 100 minis –0.54% 
  • Canaccord stocks strategists are out arguing this morning that while earnings growth is expected to decelerate in CY2019, growth will be “enough” to support further gains in stocks.  Their argument is built on the observation that is there is direct positive correlation between the direction of earnings and (directional) price moves in the US stock market. 
  • According to the American Association of Individual Investors, individual traders are becoming increasingly more bullish according to their proprietary surveys
  • The VIX is little changed this morning and is currently at 16.3 after closing at 15.38 yesterday

Cryptos

  • Cryptocurrencies bounced off their lows overnight as all major cryptocurrencies are trading higher in the last 24 hours. Bitcoin (BTC) is posting modest gains as it lags major coins, edging higher by just 0.11% in the last 24 hours to USD$3,414.64. Bitcoin SV (BSV) leads major coins in today’s trading, up 9.01% in the last 24 hours to USD$63.47. Despite BSV’s 9%+ rally, it still has yet to retake its position as the 10th largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, which Binance Coin (BNB) currently maintains after rallying more than 90% from its low in early December. Currently, BNB is up 0.13% in the last 24 hours to USD$8.08.  
  • Fundstrat Global Advisors warned its clients that cryptocurrency prices could hit lower lows and continue their extended bear market in an email quoted by Bloomberg. Fundstrat strategist Robert Sluymer believes that, based on the current performance of Bitcoin (BTC) and altcoins, prices could fall further. Sluymer wrote in the email, “The price structure for most cryptocurrencies remains weak and appears vulnerable to a pending breakdown to lower lows.”  
  • South Korea’s central bank, the Bank of Korea, warned that issuing central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could squeeze domestic banks. According to a report by news outlet Yonhap News Agency, the warning from the Bank of Korea comes after the central bank conducted a 6-month long consultation process surrounding CBDCs. Last week, the Bank of Korea also announced it had no plans to introduce a CBDC. In the report by Yonhap news, the author writes, “Demand deposits are one of the biggest sources of loans by banks. When people pull out their money, banks raise rates, or lower the reserve ratio, to secure more funds.”  
  • AdvisorShares, a US investment management company, and Sabretooth Advisors, a US investment advisory company, are partnering to launch an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks tech companies involved in blockchain and cloud computing. According to a report published by MarketWatch, the new AdvisorShares Sabretooth ETF (BKCH) will come to market Thursday, February 7th.
