US Stocks

  • Market sentiment is dropping dramatically in the pre-market following an announcement that US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will not meet before a March 1 trade war deadline.  This came after Director of National Economic Council (NEC) Larry Kudlow commented that “there is pretty sizeable distance to go” in the trade negotiations between the world’s two largest economies.
  • US stocks index futures are dropping with front-month Dow Jones minis –0.56%, S&P 500 minis –0.59% and Nasdaq 100 minis –0.84%
  • The S&P 500 failed to break above its 200-day moving average earlier this week, a key technical price level, which may point to a near-term cap to the recent rally in US stocks
  • BCA Research, an independent research firm, argues that global stocks should remain directionless in the near-term as there does not appear to be any clear direction to market at the moment.  BCA observes that the MSCI All-Country index hasn’t risen or fallen for more than three months at any time since 2H2017.  The independent research firm believes this trend will continue given the vulnerability of stocks valuations to interest rates.
  • The VIX is higher this morning and is currently at 17.07 after closing at 16.37 yesterday
  • SPY February 8 OTM Calls & Puts, Bank of America (BAC) February 8 OTM Calls, and Apple (AAPL) February 8 & February 15 OTM Calls are some of the most heavily traded options contracts in the US pre-market

  • The US Treasury 2s-10s Spread has narrowed 0.6 basis points to 0.17%

Cryptos

  • Cryptocurrency prices are seeing a flush of green this morning with the price of Bitcoin (BTC) up 1.05% in the last 24 hours to USD$3,453.33. Litecoin (LTC) is leading the gains in major coins this morning, surging 13.46% in the last 24 hours to USD$37.96 on news of talks to implement privacy features in the coin’s network through the Mimblewimble protocol. Bitcoin SV (BSV) is seeing the most modest gains, up just 0.24% in the last 24 hours to USD$63.68.
  • The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will likely approve a Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded fund (ETF), that is, according to comments made by SEC commissioner Robert J. Jackson Jr. in an interview with political journal Congressional Quarterly leaked to Twitter. In the interview, Jackson discussed, “Eventually, do I think someone will satisfy the standards we’ve laid out there? I hope so, yes, and I think so.” Jackson is the SEC’s only Democratic commissioner.
  • According to a report published by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the USD$145mm in digital assets that are allegedly stuck in QuadrigaCX cold wallets may actually be missing altogether. The founder and CEO of QuadrigaCX, Gerald Cotton, passed away in December from Crohn’s disease and was reportedly the sole executive with access to the exchange’s cold wallets.  The WSJ article cites James Edwards, a crypto analyst who frequently publishes research on Zerononcense, who claims, “It appears that there are no identifiable cold wallet reserves for QuadrigaCX.”
  • Invstr, a mobile investing application, announced the launch of a cryptocurrency index on its platform that will allow users to expose their portfolios to crypto markets. According to an official press release Wednesday, “Traditional indices measure impact on the asset class not an investor’s portfolio... This is not a relevant consideration for smaller investors who want to know what the impact will be on their portfolios. The Invstr Crypto Index addresses this by using weightings that optimize risk-reward based on the volatility of the constituent assets.”
