US Stocks

  • US stocks index futures are pointing to a continuation of yesterday’s rally with front-month Dow Jones minis +0.30%, S&P 500 minis +0.26%, and Nasdaq 100 minis +0.45% 
  • January CPI is set to be released this morning at 8:30am.  Market forecasts are for +0.1% increase M/M and +1.5% Y/Y.  In comparison, CPI contracted 0.1% M/M in December and expanded +1.9% Y/Y in December. 
  • Stocks newsletter writers classified as “bullish” by Investors Intelligence (II) has crept up to 49.5% (from 48.6% last week).  Optimism among newsletter writers has been climbing for 6 straight weeks, the longest streak since late November/December 2016.  Typically, II views 50% as the level where it becomes worried about too much “newsletter optimism”. 
  • Operating margins for S&P 500 companies appear to have peaked in 2Q/3Q of CY2018 as we begin to lap the implementation of the Republican tax plan.  Gross margins have been holding steady, implying management teams are successfully managing the volatility in commodity markets, while net income margins have been inching downwards.  In order to manage profitability margins going forward, S&P 500 companies will have to control future growth in spending. 
  • CFRA is arguing that Midsize companies are looking like they are the most attractive relative to other large-cap and small-cap peers with average Forward 12-month P/Es at their lowest relative level since 2009
  • Stocks with strong balance sheets have been some of the top performing US stocks with valuations now trading at a 6-year premium to those stocks with the high debt relative to cash flow (highly leveraged companies).  Typically, companies with good balance sheets are viewed as “safe” during periods of market volatility and in economic slowdowns/contractions.

  • Activision Blizzard (ATVI) reported fourth quarter adjusted EPS of USD$1.29 matching consensus of USD$1.29.  Activision Blizzard reported fourth quarter total sales of USD$2.84 billion missing consensus of USD$3.04 billion.  Activision Blizzard said first quarter 2019 EPS will come around 20 cents, well below 47 cents consensus.  Its dividend was raised to 37 cents per share from 34 cents.  Activision Blizzard announnced a restructuring that will see it cut 8% of its workforce.  Activision Blizzard is rated “Neutral” in our US Large-Cap Global Top Stock Ideas and “Top Buy” in our US Information Technology Global Top Stock Ideas.

  • Black Knight Inc. (BKI) announced adjusted EPS in CY4Q2018 of USD$0.50 that beat consensus of USD$0.47. Black Knight observed 6.4% y/y revenue growth to USD$285.6mm in CY4Q2018, in line with analyst expectations. Cryptos

  • Cryptocurrencies were broadly mixed overnight with the price of Bitcoin (BTC) slightly lower by 0.31% in the last 24 hours to USD$3,620.58. Ethereum (ETH) and EOS (EOS) are leading top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization in gains, up 1.40% and 1.73% in the last 24 hours to USD$122.58 and USD$2.84, respectively. Monero (XMR) and Maker (MKR) are also posting the largest gains among top 20 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, up 4.05% and 5.94% to USD$50.08 and USD$516.88, respectively.  
  • According to a Bloomberg report, cryptocurrency miners and investors are using derivatives in an attempt to survive the crypto bear market. Bloomberg highlights in the article that crypto derivative instruments, such as options, are beginning to gain popularity as a means to generate short-term cash. The report by Bloomberg quotes Sam Bankman-Fried, CEO of quantitative digital asset trading firm Alameda Research, who said, “Anyone sitting on a stockpile of tokens saw in the bear market of 2018 that their business is at the mercy of crypto prices. It can be crucial for those players’ survival to have some cash if digital asset prices go down.”  
  • The University of California, Berkeley (US Berkeley) is set to launch a 12-week accelerator program aimed at blockchain startups in their early stages, according to an official announcement. Dubbed the Berkeley Blockchain Xcelerator, the accelerator program is sponsored in part by venture capital fund Berkeley X-Lab Fund. Gloria Zhao, president of Blockchain at Berkeley, discussed the reasoning behind the accelerator program, saying, “With such a nascent technology as blockchain, we see that a lot of subject matter experts and people make an impact in the blockchain space are students.” 
  • Busan, the second-largest city in South Korea, signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with blockchain firm Hyundai Pay, as per an official press release published Monday. As part of the MoU, Busan and Hyundai Pay will promote the development and growth of blockchain startups and jobs in the South Korean city.
