US Stocks
- Global stocks are declining to start the short week as global trade tensions are back in focus
- Investors are back to worrying about a contagion effect from economic crises in emerging markets with Turkey and Argentina in the news again
- US stocks index futures are pointing to a negative open in NY with the Dow Jones minis -0.15%, S&P500 minis –0.01% and Nasdaq 100 minis +0.03%
- The VIX is little changed this morning and is currently at 13.4 after closing at 12.86 last week
- Apple (AAPL) September 07 OTM Calls, General Electric (GE) October 19 OTM Puts, SPY September 04 OTM Calls, and Electronic Arts (EA) March 2019 OTM Calls are the most heavily traded options contracts in the US pre-market
- US 10-Year Treasury Bonds are lower with yields up 1.08 basis points to 2.8712%
- The US Treasury 2s-10s Spread has widened 0.47 basis points to 0.24%
- WTI Crude is currently down -0.64% to USD$69.8/bbl with the Brent-WTI spread up USD$2.67 to USD$9.24/bbl
- Gold is currently down -0.58% to USD$1194.26/oz

- Amazon (AMZN) is in talks with Chile to house and mine data that its telescopes generate according to press reports this morning. The idea is to be able to boost data processing capabilities in Latin America. Amazon is rated ‘Attractive’ in our US Large-Cap Global Top Picks and ‘Top Buy’ in our US Consumer Discretionary Global Top Picks.
- China is considering a merger of China United Network Communications (China Unicom-6000050 CH) and China Telecommunications Corp to speed up the development of 5G, according to a report in Bloomberg. These two players are dwarfed by the much larger China Mobile (941 HK). No official announcement has been made by China yet. China Mobile is rated ‘Neutral’ in our China All-Cap Global Top Picks. China Unicom and China Telecom are not rated in Global Top Picks.
- Deutsche Bank (DBK GR) will be dropped from the Euro Stoxx 50 for the first time since its creation in 1998. Deutsche Bank’s ADRs peaked in 2007 at US$152.44 and have since fallen 90% to US$11.26. The ordinaries closed at EUR9.70. Deutsche Bank is rated ‘Unattractive’ in our European Large-Cap Global Top Picks.
- Iliad (ILD) reported results showing subscriber losses in both its broadband and mobile units as well as a cut to its profit forecast for 2020. Many analyst comments highlighted a coming recovery and the stock is up 10.7%. Iliad is rated ‘Top Short’ in our European Large-Cap Global Top Picks.
- JD.com (JD) saw its CEO taken into custody over the weekend in Minnesota for allegation of sexual misconduct but was freed after 16 houra with no charges and no travel restrictions. JD.com is rated 'Unattractive’ in our China All-Cap Global Top Picks.
- Line (3938 JP), the largest messaging service in Japan, will be selling US$1.3bn in convertible debt, to fund a push into financial services and AI-powered products. Plans include the creation of mobile payments service. Line Corp in not rated in our Global Top Picks
- Tencent (700 HK) has been taking orders for its US$4.4bn IPO of Meituan Dianping, as it highlights that the company may never be profitable. The IPO is priced HK$60-72 per share at this point. Tencent is rated ‘Top Buy’ in our China All-Cap Global Top Picks.
- WPP (WPP LN) saw its stock trade 8.6% lower to US$76.77 in pre-market trading after it reported a forecast that included a margin squeeze as it tries to revive growth. WPP is rated ‘Neutral’ in our United Kingdom All-Cap Global Top Picks.

Cryptos
- Andreas Antonopoulos, Bitcoin evangelist, believes Bitcoin ETFs will be negative for Bitcoin long-term as it will let investor speculate about its price more easily. Antonopoulos believes a Bitcoin ETF will permit market makers to manipulate Bitcoin markets and that individual investors would move away from playing an important part in the decision-making process of the cryptocurrency ecosystem (since they would inevitably shy away from the responsibilities of owning Bitcoin key).
- Bittrex, the US cryptocurrency exchange, is buying a 10% stake in Malta-based blockchain firm Palladium according to the Times of Malta.
- Bittrex has decided to delist Bitcoin Gold following failure by the cryptocurrency to pay Bittrex the monthly listing fee of USD$262,907.
- Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, the largest bank in China, has announced it will focus on investing in “intelligent banking” and the deployment of new financial technologies. The goal of the bank is to introduce “smart banking” to the financial ecosystem in China.
